The Marathwada region of Maharashtra is among the most drought-hit areas of the country where farmer suicides and debt have become an everyday affair. Over 60% of those in Beed district live below poverty line. Fractured livelihood systems have forced a large population from this belt to leave their homes and become migrant sugarcane cutters in faraway lands. The vicious cycle of poverty and debt adversely affects all social indicators.
On the show ‘Brides of Beed’, we explore the surge in child marriages among the cane cutting community amid the coronavirus pandemic. Also on theshow, we explore why a significant number of the cane cutting women of Central Maharashtra have undergone a life altering procedure and are without wombs.
