Pakistanis Join in Ashoura Processions

Thousands of Shiite Muslims marched amid tight security in the streets of Pakistan’s capital city, Islamabad, Saturday.

They were gathered to commemorate Ashoura, the festival of mourning for the seventh-century martyrdom of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Tight security measures were imposed, and guards could be seen searching the mourners at the procession.

As part of the rituals marking the most important holiday for Shiite Muslims, many participants hit their chests, performed self-flagellation and repeated the phrase "Ya Hussein" to express their grief.
