Safety concerns about Kozhikode airport, which has a table-top runway, were raised at least on two occasions in the past. In July last year, the DGCA had issued a show-cause notice to the director of the Kozhikode airport citing various critical safety lapses, including cracks on the runway, water stagnation, and excessive rubber deposits. However, a year later on Friday, at least 19 people were killed after an Air India Express plane returning from Dubai skidded off the runway and broke in two while landing at Kerala’s Kozhikode.
The tragedy is very similar to the one that happened in Mangalore 10 years ago. In the year 2010, a Boeing 737 aircraft of Air India Express operating an incoming flight to Mangalore had overshot the runway while landing at the table-top airport. In the year 2010, a Boeing 737 aircraft of Air India Express operating an incoming flight to Mangalore had overshot the runway while landing at the table-top airport. A total of 158 people were killed. It is to be noted that in both the tragedies, the aircraft had overshot the runway while landing at the table-top airport.
