CBS host and best friend to Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, received a ton of backlash online for her interview with WNBA basketball Lisa Leslie on the topic of recently deceased NBA basketball legend Kobe Bryant. The sexual assault allegation from Kobe’s past, 17 years ago now, was brought up. King asked a handful of questions in a short clip uploaded by CBS relating to the issue.
People online saw the clip and perhaps rightfully so, became enraged. Kobe had just passed away. The shock and pain was still evident in the minds of many across the world. Especially on what the cool kids call "Black Twitter." So the critique given to Gayle King for asking the questions she did during the interview came fast and furious.
Gayle King then responded, against the advice of those around her who understand internet culture know that this would blow over with a day or two. She noted how the issue of Kobe’s past had already come up and she allowed Lisa Leslie to speak as a friend of his, a person that truly knows him. Lisa not only said that Kobe was a great man and would not do a thing like what he had been accused of in 2003, but she also said the media should back off and not badger the family or the ruin the memory of Kobe Bryant.
So the desired end result of the interview as it relates to that topic appears to be much different than what it actually was thanks to CBS uploading a small clip of a long interview for the purposes of salaciousness and online drama to make money.
