Volcano Explodes in Mexico, Creating Massive Column of Ash and Smoke

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano erupted Thursday, January 9, sending lava and rocks spewing from the rim and a column of smoke billowing 3 kilometers into the sky.

Mexican Civil Defense reported a yellow volcanic alert and people to steer clear of the foothills of the volcano.

Popocatepetl is 5,426 meters tall and is the second-highest mountain in Mexico, the fifth highest in North America. It is one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes. (REUTERS)
