The fate of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the 23-year-old multilateral trade-governing institution, is precariously hanging in the balance. On December 10, the WTO’s Appellate Body will cease to function after the U.S. blocked appointments to its panel. Amid global trade tensions, there is clamor for WTO reforms.
