Judge orders man to write 500-word essay after spitting on immigrant

An Oregon judge has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 90 days in prison and ordered him to write a 500-word essay on the challenges immigrants face.

Harold Eugene Denson III received his sentence on Nov. 22 after pleading no contest to charges of unlawful use of a weapon and committing a bias crime in the second degree. Denson told an immigrant to the United States to “go back to your country” and then spit in his face, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office in Oregon.

Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Nicole Hermann prosecuted the case against Denson.

“This is a unique resolution to a very serious incident,” Hermann said in a statement. “Mr. Denson needs to understand the impact his actions had on the victim and our immigrant communities. This is an opportunity for him to reconcile his behavior through compassion, learning and understanding.”

Denson has until March to write an essay on the challenges immigrants face. If the court accepts his work, he will be able to have his bias charge dismissed. If he does not write the essay or the court rejects it, Denson could face additional penalties.

Denson’s victim is a Ukrainian immigrant working for a local car dealership. On Aug. 25, the manager of the car dealership told the victim that someone was throwing trash on the dealership’s property. The victim retrieved a trash bag and walked out to the parking lot where he met Denson.

The victim gave the trash bag to Denson and told him to pick up the trash. Denson agreed at first but then yelled to the victim to “go back to your country” as he was walking away. The victim turned around and confronted Denson, and Denson then threatened the victim with a box cutter he picked up from the ground.

Police arrested Denson later in the day.
