Iraq Prime Minister agrees to resign after deadly protests

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said Friday that he will submit his resignation to the parliament in response to anti-government protests and demand by the Shiite religious leadership. The announcement came after weeks of anti-government unrest. According to the United Nations human rights office, Iraqi security forces shot dead at least 24 protesters and injured 210 in the past two days, bringing the total number of casualties to 354 deaths and 8,104 wounded. The unrest is Iraq’s biggest crisis for years.
