John Mearsheimer is an American political scientist known for his theory of “offensive realism.” While favoring liberal democracy at home, he is a fierce critic of the policy of “liberal hegemony,” the type of foreign policy the United States has pursued since the end of the Cold War. His most recent book, The Great Delusion: Liberal Dreams and International Realities, examines the effects on contemporary international relations. So, how does he see the unfolding of the current world situation, with multilateralism and globalism under attack? How is U.S. policy different as practiced by Donald Trump? And what relationship does he see between the world’s two biggest economies, as China continues to become stronger?
In the second half of the show, we also talked to professor Xie Tao at the Beijing Foreign Studies University, regarding his insight on Mearsheimer’s theory, where John Mearsheimer conducted academic research and delivered a lecture about his theory of offensive realism.
