Dubs Pick Up First Win of Season

Third time proved to be the charm. After opening the season with a pair of ugly defeats, the Warriors pushed the pace whenever possible and picked up a 134-123 win in New Orleans on Monday for their first win of the season.

Draymond Green registered his 23rd career triple-double, and first of the season, Damion Lee had his best game as a pro and Stephen Curry had 26 points and 10 assists, but the Dubs got contributions from throughout the lineup.

The Dubs opened the game by going small, as rookie guard Jordan Poole made his first career start, and the move paid instant dividends with three made 3-pointers through the first six minutes of the game. Unlike the first two games in which the Dubs fell behind by double digits early, the Warriors were the ones dictating the action.

Sparked by Poole’s shooting and Omari Spellman’s hustle, the Warriors built a 10-point lead in the opening quarter and added 45 points in the second quarter to assume total control.

Green was in the middle of everything for the Warriors. After news broke earlier in the day that Michigan State would retire his number, Green came out with a spring in his step and inhaled seemingly every rebound to start a Warriors break. He went 7-for-12 from the field for 16 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists, eight of which came in the first half.

Green was a +36 in his 34 minutes on the floor, one of three Warriors with a plus/minus rating of at least 30 for the game, as he was joined by Curry (+32) and Glenn Robinson III (+30) in that department.

D’Angelo Russell also gave the Warriors a big lift with 24 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. When Curry went to the bench with his fourth foul early in the third quarter, Russell shouldered the load and the Dubs added to their lead with Curry on the bench. Likewise, Lee established career-highs with 23 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 4-for-6 on 3-pointers.

With the win, the Warriors improve to 1-2 and will return home to host the Suns on Wednesday in the first of four straight home games.
